Understanding Anxiety in Teens

Teen anxiety and mental health needs often look different from adult anxiety. It may show up as irritability, withdrawal, or even physical complaints rather than clear expressions of worry. Many teens struggle to articulate what they’re feeling, which can make it harder for parents to recognize when something is wrong.

Adolescents often face unique triggers, including:

  • Academic expectations and performance pressure
  • Social media and peer comparison
  • Bullying or social isolation
  • Family changes or conflict
  • Uncertainty about the future

Because teens may struggle to express what they’re feeling, anxiety can sometimes go unrecognized without professional support. Lumos can help your teen with mental health support.

Common Symptoms of Teen Anxiety

Anxiety in teens can affect both the mind and body. Emotionally, teens may experience constant worry, racing thoughts, or a sense of dread without a clear reason. They may become easily overwhelmed, avoid social situations, or lose interest in activities they once enjoyed.

Physical symptoms are also common. Many teens report headaches, stomachaches, fatigue, or trouble sleeping. Others may experience a rapid heartbeat, shortness of breath, or even panic attacks. Because these symptoms can mimic other conditions, a professional evaluation is often key to identifying anxiety as the root cause.

Causes of Anxiety Disorders in Adolescents

Teen anxiety is rarely caused by a single factor. Instead, it typically develops from a combination of genetic, biological, and environmental influences. Some teens may have a natural predisposition toward anxiety due to family history, while others may be more affected by brain chemistry changes that occur during adolescence.

Environmental stressors also play a significant role. Ongoing academic demands, social challenges, or past traumatic experiences can increase vulnerability. Lifestyle habits—such as poor sleep, excessive screen time and social media use, or lack of physical activity—may further intensify symptoms. Understanding these contributing factors allows for more effective, personalized treatment.

Teen Anxiety Treatment Options in San Jose and Los Gatos

At Lumos Psychiatric Services, we take an individualized and comprehensive approach to treating teen anxiety. Treatment often includes a combination of therapy, medication when appropriate, and lifestyle guidance. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is particularly effective in helping teens recognize negative thought patterns and develop healthier coping strategies.

We also work closely with families to improve communication and create a supportive home environment. When needed, medication can help regulate symptoms and provide stability, allowing teens to fully engage in therapy and daily life.

Lumos Psychiatric Reviews

Dr. Maitra is awesome! I can't say enough about her. She cares about her patients and has a great team of co-workers. Swati goes above and beyond and handles extra tasks for me. More than recommended for anyone who wants a great professional at an accommodating clinic with a lovely team of staff members. Thanks for everything, guys!

I didn't want to consult a psychiatrist because my lifestyle demanded mental health therapy. I thought I could do it all, handle it all, and be the superwoman everyone thought I was and my family expected of me...anxiety and depression took over my life and I tried everything to rise above it. In my 20s, I was diagnosed with ADHD. Left untreated, the symptoms tormented my life and hurt people I loved. Dr. Maitra is compassionate and the best psychiatrist around. She helped me understand I had a biological imbalance, not just a mental illness. She gave me the strength to share my journey without shame. Dr. Maitra has also been helping me with other private concerns, so I'm confident and hopeful I can overcome these too. Her office is gorgeous and her team handles the important aspects! I would recommend her to anyone who needs a second or third opportunity, is hesitant about a diagnosis, fears judgment, or has lost hope!

She's humble and kind. If you trust her, she can change your life too!

Finding the right doctor has been one of the hardest journeys I’ve ever been on — but Lumos Psychiatric has been nothing short of heaven sent.
Dr. Maitra is truly one of a kind. Every time I leave her office, it’s like someone turned down the volume on all the noise in my head. That quiet confidence of I got this — she gives me that. Every single time. I don’t know how she does it, but she does.
And the staff? I genuinely can’t say enough. Manisha, you are an absolute gem.
Places like this remind you that the right support truly exists.
