Most patients describe the sensation as light tapping on the scalp during treatment. Mild discomfort is most common during the first few sessions and often improves as treatment continues.
Treatment length varies depending on your prescribed protocol. Your provider will explain your individualized schedule before therapy begins.
Many patients continue taking prescribed medications while receiving Deep TMS. Your psychiatrist will determine the most appropriate treatment plan based on your individual circumstances.
Since no sedation is used, patients are able to drive, work, attend school, and participate in normal activities immediately following treatment.

- Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), including patients who haven’t improved on prior antidepressant medication, and to help reduce anxiety symptoms in adults with depression (anxious depression);
- Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD); and
- Short-term smoking cessation.
Is Deep TMS right for you?
Deep TMS is non-invasive and drug-free. It isn’t a medication and requires no anesthesia or sedation. Side effects are usually mild and temporary, most often brief scalp discomfort or headache around a session; as with all TMS, seizure is a rare risk. Deep TMS isn’t suitable for people with non-removable metal or implanted electronic devices in or near the head. Dr. Maitra will review your history to confirm it’s appropriate for you.
