Types of psychotic disorders
Psychotic disorders make it difficult for patients to think clearly and respond to reality in ways that are emotionally and behaviorally appropriate. Patients with severe psychotic disorders may have trouble discerning what is real from what is imagined, making daily living nearly impossible.
Lumos Psychiatric Services treats and helps manage all types of psychotic disorders, including:
-
Schizophrenia – Schizophrenia causes sufferers to lose touch with reality as well as a host of other troubling symptoms such as hallucinations, experiencing the world in a distorted way, paranoia, delusions, difficulty showing emotions, and trouble with memory and cognition.
-
Schizoaffective disorder – Schizoaffective disorder includes symptoms of schizophrenia as well as a mood disorder such as bipolar disorder. There are two types of schizoaffective disorders – bipolar (which includes episodes of mania and depression) and depressive (which only includes depression episodes).
-
Delusional disorder – Patients with delusional disorder are unable to tell the difference between what is real and what they are imagining. People with delusional disorder often have delusions that aren’t too far from reality, but are not based in reality nonetheless. Delusional disorder patients may experience paranoia, believing that someone is following them or out to get them.
Treatment for psychotic disorders
Treatment for psychotic disorders generally includes a combination of medication, psychotherapy, and lifestyle changes. Dr. Sarbani Maitra and her team at Lumos help patients find the right combinations to help them reclaim their lives. We also provide therapy for families of patients with psychotic disorders, as families often struggle when one member suffers from one of these disorders.

Dr. Maitra is awesome! I can't say enough about her. She cares about her patients and has a great team of co-workers. Swati goes above and beyond and handles extra tasks for me. More than recommended for anyone who wants a great professional at an accommodating clinic with a lovely team of staff members. Thanks for everything, guys!

I didn't want to consult a psychiatrist because my lifestyle demanded mental health therapy. I thought I could do it all, handle it all, and be the superwoman everyone thought I was and my family expected of me...anxiety and depression took over my life and I tried everything to rise above it. In my 20s, I was diagnosed with ADHD. Left untreated, the symptoms tormented my life and hurt people I loved. Dr. Maitra is compassionate and the best psychiatrist around. She helped me understand I had a biological imbalance, not just a mental illness. She gave me the strength to share my journey without shame. Dr. Maitra has also been helping me with other private concerns, so I'm confident and hopeful I can overcome these too. Her office is gorgeous and her team handles the important aspects! I would recommend her to anyone who needs a second or third opportunity, is hesitant about a diagnosis, fears judgment, or has lost hope!
She's humble and kind. If you trust her, she can change your life too!
