What is the difference between a psychiatrist and a psychiatric doctor?

The job of a “psychiatrist” and a “psychiatric doctor” is essentially the same. Both of these words refer to a doctor who is an expert in mental illnesses and problems. They both can diagnose mental illness, prescribe medication, prevent future mental illness, and provide treatments like psychotherapy. If you are searching for a psychiatrist, the team at Lumos Psychiatric Services provides this service to patients in San Jose, CA and Los Gatos, CA.

When should I see a psychiatrist vs psychologist?

Both psychiatrists and psychologists can identify mental health problems, but the way they treat them is different. If you think medication might help or if you have a complicated problem that needs to be looked at by a doctor, you should see a psychiatrist first. A psychologist might be the best place to start if you’re more interested in talk therapy or counseling than in taking medications right away. If you are looking for mental health services, reach out to Lumos Psychiatric Services, we offer help at our San Jose, CA and Los Gatos, CA locations.

Is it better to see a psychiatrist or psychologist?

Whether you should see a psychiatrist or a psychologist relies on your needs, preferences, and the kind of problems you’re having. Many people find that the best treatment is a mix of medicine (from a psychiatrist) and therapy (from a psychologist). You don’t have to choose between the two types of expertise, and you can gain from both. The best choice will rely on your situation, the nature of your worries, and how you prefer your treatment.

What does a psychiatrist do?

A psychiatrist is a doctor who specializes in diagnosing, treating, and preventing mental, emotional, and behavioral problems. They take a whole-person approach to mental health care, which means they use medical, therapeutic, and teaching methods to support the well-being of their patients.

What is a psychologist vs psychiatrist?

Both psychologists and psychiatrists are very important to mental health care, but they are trained differently and often treat patients in different ways. Most psychologists have a Ph.D., Psy.D., or Ed.D. in psychology, and their training works on how people act, how emotions work, how their brains work, and how psychological research is done. On the other hand, psychiatrists are MDs or DOs who do training in psychiatry after getting their degrees. This training gives them a full understanding of health on both a physical and mental level.

Is psychiatry good for anxiety?

Yes, psychiatry can help diagnose and treat anxiety conditions very well. Anxiety is a broad term that includes many different disorders, such as generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, and specific fears. A combination of treatments, including psychiatry, therapy, lifestyle changes, and other treatments, might be necessary to effectively manage anxiety. Dr. Maitra is awesome! I can't say enough about her. She cares about her patients and has a great team of co-workers. Swati goes above and beyond and handles extra tasks for me. More than recommended for anyone who wants a great professional at an accommodating clinic with a lovely team of staff members. Thanks for everything, guys!

I didn't want to consult a psychiatrist because my lifestyle demanded mental health therapy. I thought I could do it all, handle it all, and be the superwoman everyone thought I was and my family expected of me...anxiety and depression took over my life and I tried everything to rise above it. In my 20s, I was diagnosed with ADHD. Left untreated, the symptoms tormented my life and hurt people I loved. Dr. Maitra is compassionate and the best psychiatrist around. She helped me understand I had a biological imbalance, not just a mental illness. She gave me the strength to share my journey without shame. Dr. Maitra has also been helping me with other private concerns, so I'm confident and hopeful I can overcome these too. Her office is gorgeous and her team handles the important aspects! I would recommend her to anyone who needs a second or third opportunity, is hesitant about a diagnosis, fears judgment, or has lost hope!

She's humble and kind. If you trust her, she can change your life too!

4.5
Dr. Maitra saved my life. She doesn't just sit with you for 15 minutes and send you on your way. She cares, she listens and she prescribes accordingly. Her staff was always responsive and caring. When I moved out of state she even helped me get set up with a new psychiatrist. I'm eternally grateful for Dr. Maitra and her staff.
Dr. Maitra is a rare type of doctor. She takes extra time with each of her patients. Although this sometimes means waiting a bit more for your appointment, it ensures adequate time is given to address your issues. Dr. Maitra along with her staff are very friendly and accommodating. They provide snacks and water for while waiting in the lobby. The overall atmosphere in her clinic is that of a "mom and pop shop". The staff are respectful and yet very personable. I cannot recommend her services enough.
I highly recommend this psychiatric service to anyone looking for an educated MD who actually cares about her clients and makes sure they are taken care of. Dr Maitra is truly one of a kind and my family is very thankful that we found her after wasting thousands of dollars with other psychiatric firms who only take your money and don’t actually care about their patients. I searched high and low throughout the bay area and Lumos and Dr Maitra are by far the best service I have found. You will not be disappointed if you are generally looking for help and a Doctor who actually cares about your health and wellbeing! The staff here are also extremely responsive and helpful and will never leave you out in the cold in a time of need. So glad I found Lumos and Dr Maitra!
