Frequently Asked Questions
What is NeuroStar TMS?

NeuroStar TMS is a safe, effective treatment for depression that uses focused magnetic pulses, similar in strength to an MRI, to revitalize connections in an area of the brain responsible for regulating mood. When these connections are reawakened, many people experience measurable relief from their depression symptoms.

NeuroStar TMS treatment is an FDA-approved, non-invasive, non-medicated treatment for depression that utilizes focused magnetic fields to stimulate specific regions of the brain that regulate your mood.

Does NeuroStar TMS Work in Decreasing My Depression Symptoms?

In a study of “real-world” outcomes (meaning actual NeuroStar patients), 83% of people who completed the full NeuroStar TMS treatment cycle experienced a measurable decrease in the severity of their depression, and 62% of those completing treatment saw full remission – meaning their depression effectively “went away.”*

Does the NeuroStar TMS Procedure Hurt?

A typical treatment session takes under 30 minutes, does not involve anesthesia or medication, and is painless. While there may be some minor discomfort at the treatment site (where the device touches your head), it generally subsides within the first week of treatment.

You can read, watch TV, or talk with your treatment coordinator during your session. During Neurostar TMS treatment, you remain fully awake and alert and can resume daily activities immediately afterward, including driving.

Some patients report feeling a “tapping” or discomfort when the device touches their head. If you feel any pain during your NeuroStar TMS session, tell your clinician.

What Mental Health Disorders Does NeuroStar TMS Treat?

NeuroStar TMS treatment has been extensively researched and is FDA-cleared for effectively treating obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), major depressive disorder (MDD), those with anxiety symptoms caused by MDD, and those not seeing a change in their OCD or MDD symptoms with medication.

Is NeuroStar TMS Treatment Appropriate for Teens and Adolescents?

NeuroStar TMS has been approved for teens and adolescents with a diagnosis of major depressive disorder (MDD) through ages 15-21. Please ask your child’s clinician or mental health team if they could benefit from NeuroStar TMS treatments.

What are the Side Effects of NeuroStar TMS Treatments?

Some patients prefer NeuroStar TMS treatments as it does not have the same increased risk of side effects as SSRIs or other medications. The most commonly reported side effect was temporary pain or discomfort at or near the treatment site during therapy, typically resolving within the first week of treatment.

Patients are advised to promptly inform their healthcare provider if they experience worsening depression symptoms, signs of suicidal behavior, or any unusual behavior.
