What is Generalized Anxiety Disorder?
Generalized Anxiety Disorder is more than occasional stress or worry. It involves persistent and excessive anxiety about daily events—such as work, health, relationships, or finances—that is difficult to control. For many people, GAD creates physical symptoms like muscle tension, fatigue, and digestive issues, along with emotional symptoms like irritability and restlessness. Left untreated, these patterns can interfere with sleep, focus, and overall quality of life.
What are the Symptoms of Generalized Anxiety Disorder?
Those struggling with GAD often report feeling restless or constantly “on edge.” Trouble concentrating, difficulty falling asleep, or waking up throughout the night are common. Some individuals describe mental blanks during stressful situations, while others notice irritability and frustration over small triggers. Physical signs such as rapid heartbeat, sweating, or muscle aches can also appear. If these symptoms occur more days than not for several months, it may be time to seek professional GAD treatment.
Causes and Risk Factors for Generalized Anxiety Disorder
The causes of Generalized Anxiety Disorder are usually a combination of genetic, biological, and environmental influences. Having a family history of anxiety or mood disorders may increase the risk. Imbalances in brain chemistry, particularly in neurotransmitters that regulate mood, can contribute to these conditions. Stressful life events, trauma, or ongoing environmental pressures may also trigger symptoms. In addition, poor sleep, medical issues, or lifestyle factors such as caffeine or substance use can make GAD worse.
What Are My Treatment Options for Generalized Anxiety Disorder?
At Lumos, every patient begins with a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation better to understand symptoms and their impact on daily functioning. From there, we design a personalized treatment plan. Many patients benefit from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and other evidence-based therapies that help reframe anxious thought patterns. For others, medication management is recommended to reduce symptoms under the care of a board-certified provider.
We also emphasize wellness strategies such as improving sleep hygiene, practicing stress reduction techniques, incorporating movement into daily life, and supporting nutrition. For those who prefer convenience, Lumos offers flexible options, such as telepsychiatry in San Jose & Los Gatos, making expert care available from the comfort of home.

I didn't want to consult a psychiatrist because my lifestyle demanded mental health therapy. I thought I could do it all, handle it all, and be the superwoman everyone thought I was and my family expected of me...anxiety and depression took over my life and I tried everything to rise above it. In my 20s, I was diagnosed with ADHD. Left untreated, the symptoms tormented my life and hurt people I loved. Dr. Maitra is compassionate and the best psychiatrist around. She helped me understand I had a biological imbalance, not just a mental illness. She gave me the strength to share my journey without shame. Dr. Maitra has also been helping me with other private concerns, so I'm confident and hopeful I can overcome these too. Her office is gorgeous and her team handles the important aspects! I would recommend her to anyone who needs a second or third opportunity, is hesitant about a diagnosis, fears judgment, or has lost hope!
She's humble and kind. If you trust her, she can change your life too!
