What Is Social Anxiety Disorder?
Social Anxiety Disorder, sometimes called social phobia, is a condition in which everyday social situations feel overwhelming and stressful. It’s more than being shy or nervous—an intense fear of being judged, embarrassed, or rejected by others. This fear can make speaking up in class or meetings, attending social events, or even having simple conversations hard.
At Lumos Clinical in San Jose and Los Gatos, we help patients understand that social anxiety is common and treatable. If social situations make you anxious to the point where they affect your daily life, we’re here to support you.

Signs You May Have Social Anxiety
People with social anxiety often worry a lot about what others think. You might avoid social situations altogether or feel very anxious around people. Some common signs include:
- Feeling extremely nervous before or during social events
- Avoiding eye contact or speaking up
- Worrying for days or weeks before a social event
- Physical symptoms like sweating, shaking, blushing, or a fast heartbeat
- You might know your fears don’t always make sense, but you still cannot control them.
What Causes Social Anxiety?
Social anxiety can start in childhood or the teen years, but it can also develop in adulthood. A mix of family history, brain chemistry, or difficult life experiences often causes it. If you’ve ever been bullied, embarrassed in public, or raised in a very critical or anxious environment, those experiences could contribute to social anxiety.
Social Anxiety Disorder often occurs alongside other mental health conditions, which can make symptoms more complex and affect daily functioning. It commonly coexists with depression, other anxiety disorders like panic disorder or generalized anxiety, and substance use disorders, especially when individuals try to self-medicate their social fears. In some cases, social anxiety overlaps with avoidant personality disorder or can be seen in individuals with ADHD, anxiety, and PTSD. Recognizing these co-occurring conditions is essential for creating an effective, personalized treatment plan that addresses the complete picture of a person’s mental health.
How Social Anxiety Affects Your Life
Social anxiety can make simple tasks feel exhausting. It might hold you back from making new friends, trying new things, or advancing your career. Some people even avoid going to school or work because of the stress. Over time, this can lead to loneliness, low confidence, and sometimes depression.
Getting help early can make a big difference in how you feel and function daily.
How We Diagnose Social Anxiety at Lumos Clinical
At Lumos Clinical, we take time to listen and understand your experience. Our mental health professionals use interviews and questionnaires to find out how long you’ve been dealing with social anxiety and how it’s affecting your life. We make sure you feel heard, supported, and never judged.
Treatment for Social Anxiety in San Jose and Los Gatos
Our team offers effective, science-based treatments that are personalized for you. One of the most helpful therapies is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). It teaches you to change negative thinking patterns and become more comfortable in social situations. You’ll learn new skills to feel more confident and in control.
Another option is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), which helps you manage anxious thoughts and focus on living a meaningful life, even if anxiety shows up sometimes.
In some cases, we may recommend medication to help reduce anxiety symptoms. This can include SSRIs (a type of antidepressant), which are commonly used and often helpful. If medication is part of your plan, we’ll monitor your progress and adjust as needed.
We also offer teletherapy for those who prefer to receive care from the comfort of their home.

I didn't want to consult a psychiatrist because my lifestyle demanded mental health therapy. I thought I could do it all, handle it all, and be the superwoman everyone thought I was and my family expected of me...anxiety and depression took over my life and I tried everything to rise above it. In my 20s, I was diagnosed with ADHD. Left untreated, the symptoms tormented my life and hurt people I loved. Dr. Maitra is compassionate and the best psychiatrist around. She helped me understand I had a biological imbalance, not just a mental illness. She gave me the strength to share my journey without shame. Dr. Maitra has also been helping me with other private concerns, so I'm confident and hopeful I can overcome these too. Her office is gorgeous and her team handles the important aspects! I would recommend her to anyone who needs a second or third opportunity, is hesitant about a diagnosis, fears judgment, or has lost hope!
She's humble and kind. If you trust her, she can change your life too!
