Postpartum Mental Health Treatment at Lumos Psychiatric
Postpartum depression (PPD) is a severe mood disorder that can affect parents in the first year after childbirth. In the San Jose and Los Gatos communities, many families face this often misunderstood condition. Unlike the “baby blues,” which resolve within two weeks, postpartum depression brings persistent sadness, anxiety, exhaustion, guilt, and changes in appetite or sleep that significantly interfere with daily life. New parents may struggle to form a bond with their baby or feel overwhelmed by caregiving responsibilities.

Do I Have Postpartum Depression Symptoms?
Common symptoms of postpartum depression include prolonged mood swings, tearfulness, difficulty concentrating, low energy, overwhelming anxiety, and loss of interest in previously enjoyed activities. These signs can appear within days or weeks after giving birth or emerge even months later. In severe cases, individuals might experience thoughts of harm toward themselves or the baby—an urgent signal that professional care is essential.
Timely Postpartum Depression Treatment
Untreated postpartum depression can persist for months and potentially evolve into chronic depression, negatively impacting the parent-child relationship and overall family well-being. Early intervention is crucial; compassionate, evidence-based care can help families restore joy and meaningful bonds during this pivotal life chapter.
Evidence-Based Postpartum Depression Treatment Options
At Lumos Psychiatric in San Jose and Los Gatos, we tailor treatment plans to each individual’s unique needs. We offer psychotherapy for postpartum depression through approaches such as Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Interpersonal Therapy (IPT). CBT helps clients identify negative thought patterns and develop healthier coping strategies, while IPT focuses on improving relationships and emotional transitions related to parenthood.
For moderate to severe postpartum depression, medication may be recommended alongside therapy. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) are commonly prescribed. Newer options, such as Zuranolone, provide additional support, offering fast-acting symptom relief in some patients. All medication decisions are made in collaboration with your healthcare provider, especially when considering the impact on breastfeeding.
Supportive lifestyle changes and community care also play an essential role in recovery. These may include establishing a healthy routine, getting adequate rest, leaning on family or peer support, and participating in local postpartum support groups. At Lumos Psychiatric, we help you build a support system that empowers long-term wellness.

I didn't want to consult a psychiatrist because my lifestyle demanded mental health therapy. I thought I could do it all, handle it all, and be the superwoman everyone thought I was and my family expected of me...anxiety and depression took over my life and I tried everything to rise above it. In my 20s, I was diagnosed with ADHD. Left untreated, the symptoms tormented my life and hurt people I loved. Dr. Maitra is compassionate and the best psychiatrist around. She helped me understand I had a biological imbalance, not just a mental illness. She gave me the strength to share my journey without shame. Dr. Maitra has also been helping me with other private concerns, so I'm confident and hopeful I can overcome these too. Her office is gorgeous and her team handles the important aspects! I would recommend her to anyone who needs a second or third opportunity, is hesitant about a diagnosis, fears judgment, or has lost hope!
She's humble and kind. If you trust her, she can change your life too!
