What Is Panic Disorder and How Do You Know If You Have It?

Panic disorder is an anxiety condition marked by unexpected and repeated panic attacks. These episodes involve a rapid onset of intense fear or discomfort, often without a clear cause. Many individuals report feeling as if they’re losing control, having a heart attack, or even dying during an attack. You may notice physical symptoms such as trembling, chest pain, nausea, or hot flashes. Some people also feel detached from reality or fear they are “going crazy.” Over time, the fear of future attacks can lead to avoiding certain places or situations, creating a cycle of anxiety that limits your quality of life.

How Is Panic Disorder Diagnosed and Treated?

We specialize in the evaluation and treatment of panic disorder. Your journey begins with a comprehensive psychiatric assessment to understand your symptoms, triggers, and overall mental health. From there, we create a personalized treatment plan grounded in evidence-based care. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is one of the most effective approaches for panic disorder, helping patients recognize and change patterns of thinking that contribute to panic. For some, medication such as SSRIs or anti-anxiety medications may also help reduce the frequency and severity of panic attacks.

In addition to therapy and medication management, we encourage lifestyle modifications to support emotional and physical well-being. Techniques such as mindfulness, deep breathing, regular exercise, and healthy sleep habits play an essential role in managing symptoms. Our team also offers telepsychiatry services, allowing you to access expert care from the comfort of your own home.

Lumos Psychiatric Reviews

Dr. Maitra is awesome! I can't say enough about her. She cares about her patients and has a great team of co-workers. Swati goes above and beyond and handles extra tasks for me. More than recommended for anyone who wants a great professional at an accommodating clinic with a lovely team of staff members. Thanks for everything, guys!

I didn't want to consult a psychiatrist because my lifestyle demanded mental health therapy. I thought I could do it all, handle it all, and be the superwoman everyone thought I was and my family expected of me...anxiety and depression took over my life and I tried everything to rise above it. In my 20s, I was diagnosed with ADHD. Left untreated, the symptoms tormented my life and hurt people I loved. Dr. Maitra is compassionate and the best psychiatrist around. She helped me understand I had a biological imbalance, not just a mental illness. She gave me the strength to share my journey without shame. Dr. Maitra has also been helping me with other private concerns, so I'm confident and hopeful I can overcome these too. Her office is gorgeous and her team handles the important aspects! I would recommend her to anyone who needs a second or third opportunity, is hesitant about a diagnosis, fears judgment, or has lost hope!

She's humble and kind. If you trust her, she can change your life too!

I've had some complex problems and it took us a while to figure out the right meds. Dr. Maitra is your best ally in complex cases.

She communicates clearly, she trusts you, and it's easy for you to trust her. She's open to explaining the purpose and the mechanism of action of every medicine she prescribes. She's aware of a wide range of evidence-based approaches, keeps up with newest fancy meds and other advancements. Psychiatry is quite different from other areas of medicine, and I think Lumos is handling all that nuance exactly right.

They even conduct their own research here at Lumos! I've joined one of those groups myself, to help them figure out if an experimental med was useful for folks like me. It was a beautiful experience.
Dr Maitra is a great doctor. She helped me a lot overcoming some issues I had. As others reviews have said, she really cares about her patients. I recommend without hesitation.
Very thorough, professional and caring. I was able to an appointment in a reasonable amount of time. I trust Lumos with my care.
Dr. Maitra saved my life. She doesn't just sit with you for 15 minutes and send you on your way. She cares, she listens and she prescribes accordingly. Her staff was always responsive and caring. When I moved out of state she even helped me get set up with a new psychiatrist. I'm eternally grateful for Dr. Maitra and her staff.
Dr. Maitra is a rare type of doctor. She takes extra time with each of her patients. Although this sometimes means waiting a bit more for your appointment, it ensures adequate time is given to address your issues. Dr. Maitra along with her staff are very friendly and accommodating. They provide snacks and water for while waiting in the lobby. The overall atmosphere in her clinic is that of a "mom and pop shop". The staff are respectful and yet very personable. I cannot recommend her services enough.
I highly recommend this psychiatric service to anyone looking for an educated MD who actually cares about her clients and makes sure they are taken care of. Dr Maitra is truly one of a kind and my family is very thankful that we found her after wasting thousands of dollars with other psychiatric firms who only take your money and don’t actually care about their patients. I searched high and low throughout the bay area and Lumos and Dr Maitra are by far the best service I have found. You will not be disappointed if you are generally looking for help and a Doctor who actually cares about your health and wellbeing! The staff here are also extremely responsive and helpful and will never leave you out in the cold in a time of need. So glad I found Lumos and Dr Maitra!
