ADHD Evaluation for Teens: When Is It Time to Seek Help?
Every teenager has moments of distraction or impulsive behavior. Still, when these challenges consistently interfere with school, friendships, family life, or self-confidence, it may be time for a professional ADHD evaluation. At Lumos Psychiatric Services, we provide comprehensive ADHD evaluations and personalized ADHD treatment for teens in San Jose and Los Gatos, helping adolescents develop the tools they need to succeed both academically and emotionally.
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental condition that affects focus, organization, emotional regulation, and impulse control. While many children are diagnosed at an early age, some teens are not identified until increased academic demands and social pressures make symptoms more noticeable. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment can significantly improve a teen’s quality of life, academic success, and emotional well-being.
Comprehensive ADHD Testing and Diagnosis for Adolescents
An accurate ADHD diagnosis begins with a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation. Dr. Sarbani Maitra takes a thoughtful, individualized approach by reviewing your teen’s developmental history, medical background, school performance, emotional health, behavioral patterns, and family concerns. Because anxiety, depression, learning disorders, and other mental health conditions can produce symptoms similar to ADHD, a thorough evaluation helps ensure an accurate diagnosis and personalized treatment plan.
Our goal is to understand the full picture rather than focusing solely on attention difficulties, allowing us to recommend the most effective care for your teen.
Personalized ADHD Treatment for Teens in San Jose & Los Gatos
Every adolescent experiences ADHD differently, which is why treatment should never be one-size-fits-all. Depending on your teen’s needs, treatment may include medication management, behavioral strategies, executive functioning support, lifestyle recommendations, and ongoing psychiatric care.
Many teens with ADHD also experience anxiety, depression, or emotional regulation challenges. By treating coexisting conditions alongside ADHD, we help adolescents improve concentration, organization, self-confidence, academic performance, and relationships with family and peers.
Whether your teen has struggled with attention for years or recent challenges have raised concerns, our ADHD specialists are here to help your family navigate the diagnostic process with compassion, expertise, and evidence-based care. Frequently Asked Questions About Teen ADHD Treatment
What are common signs of ADHD in teenagers?
Teen ADHD symptoms often include difficulty concentrating, forgetfulness, disorganization, impulsive decision-making, procrastination, poor time management, emotional outbursts, restlessness, and declining academic performance. Some teens primarily struggle with inattention, while others experience hyperactivity, impulsivity, or a combination of both.
How is ADHD diagnosed in teens?
An ADHD diagnosis begins with a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation that reviews your teen’s developmental history, current symptoms, school performance, family history, and emotional well-being. Because several mental health conditions can mimic ADHD symptoms, a thorough evaluation helps ensure an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment plan.
What treatments are available for teen ADHD?
Treatment depends on each teen’s individual needs. Options may include medication management, behavioral therapy, organizational skill development, parent education, school accommodations, and strategies that improve focus, emotional regulation, and executive functioning. Many teens benefit from combining multiple treatment approaches.
Can ADHD occur alongside anxiety or depression?
Yes. ADHD frequently coexists with anxiety disorders, depression, learning disabilities, and other mental health conditions. Identifying these conditions during the evaluation allows for a more comprehensive treatment plan that addresses every aspect of your teen’s mental health.
When should my teen see an ADHD specialist?
If your teenager consistently struggles with attention, organization, impulsive behavior, emotional regulation, or school performance despite appropriate support, scheduling an ADHD evaluation may help identify the underlying cause. Early intervention can improve academic achievement, relationships, self-esteem, and long-term mental health outcomes.

I didn't want to consult a psychiatrist because my lifestyle demanded mental health therapy. I thought I could do it all, handle it all, and be the superwoman everyone thought I was and my family expected of me...anxiety and depression took over my life and I tried everything to rise above it. In my 20s, I was diagnosed with ADHD. Left untreated, the symptoms tormented my life and hurt people I loved. Dr. Maitra is compassionate and the best psychiatrist around. She helped me understand I had a biological imbalance, not just a mental illness. She gave me the strength to share my journey without shame. Dr. Maitra has also been helping me with other private concerns, so I'm confident and hopeful I can overcome these too. Her office is gorgeous and her team handles the important aspects! I would recommend her to anyone who needs a second or third opportunity, is hesitant about a diagnosis, fears judgment, or has lost hope!
She's humble and kind. If you trust her, she can change your life too!
